Old fashioned, simple drink
KFC seemed like a good idea at the time. I was high off the excitement of lamb shanks for lunch and Old Fashioned cocktails for the afternoon. There’s something not right about the Subiaco KFC today, all dry and not very flavoursome. Or maybe memories of Kentucky fried days gone have glossed over the imperfections of fast food reality.
The cocktails were great, though. Not perfect, but good for our level of experience.
Mix in 2 tablespoons of dissolved sugar, 2 pitted cherries, juice and rind of two small orange wedges, 3-4 dashes of bitters and a splash of water. Muddle and smush with a spoon (unless you have a muddler, that’s probably better). Add ice and a bit less than a shot of rum. Add a splash of the cherry juice too if you want. The final tastes a bit fruit punchy.
Pretty sure it would taste better with bourbon, and not so much cherry flavour. But I’m not complaining – I had 2 serves of our recipe, and would have had a third if there’d been any ice left. Yummy!
We have half a jar of cherries now. Need to think up a nice easy snack so we can finish them off. Any ideas?
