Spring onion and ginger, moist beginnings
The weather was really nice this afternoon. Hard to believe we have severe weather tonight, but it’s freakin cold out at the moment and threatening to rain more. My cats have been a bit crazy lately and I wonder if it’s because of the rain. Or maybe the transit of Venus. Or the fact that I used to play under ladders as a child. Who can say.
I’m trying a couple of gardening things tonight. One is the spring onion thing that I’ve heard so much about – kept planted, the chives will grow forever, apparently. I’m not aiming for forever – will be content with them just not dying unexpectedly. Above is a picture of the stumps in an old pickled onion jar. Once the tips peep over the lip, these alliums will find a home in dirt.
The other thing I’m trying is ginger. The internet reckons a moist ginger will sprout when planted in a rich, well draining soil. We shall see. I’m worried that it’s too cold for this guy to get going. May have to put my uggies on and brave the cold to plant it tonight. Arg. The things we do for love and cheaper groceries.
Almost bought a whole turnip to try growing, but this is getting silly. I have a jumbo hops rhizome one the way that I need to make room for. Yeah, you heard me. I’m going to try and grow hops for a homebrew. Wish me luck!
